Volunteer service is one of the great strengths of the United States. CAP provides a unique way to volunteer your time and effort to meet specific, real needs of the community state and nation, which few if any other organizations have the opportunity to do. CAP is civilian and non-combatant in nature, but has ties to the government and military, from which many of its operations come.

CAP is always looking for new members, both cadets and senior members (adults). We generally request that people attend a minimum of three unit meetings before joining, in order to learn about the CAP's programs and get a look at how the squadron operates weekly. During this time, we will also assist with the application process, and explain membership dues, priveleges, and expectations and benefits of membership. On the third meeting, we will accept a membership application, and begin processing the paperwork to join. Below are descriptions of the different membership types.

Cadets
The cadet program is a learning program for teenagers, teaching leadership and aerospace both through theory(text) as well as practical application. The mission of the cadet program is to motivate young men and women to ideas of leadership and service through aerospace education and training. While the primary function of cadets is leadership and aerospace education, they are also fully eligible to participate in CAP Emergency Services training and missions.

Cadet members progress through 16 achievements, increasing their rank and responsibility with each. There are many opportunities for staff, and command experiences, as well as special activities. Cadets also wear a modified Air Force blue uniform, as well as a modified Air Force camoflauge uniform.

Cadet membership is open to people who are at least 12 years old, and who have not yet reached their 19th birthday. A cadet can retain cadet membership until his or her 21st birthday, but a new member cannot join as a cadet after they have turned 19.

Senior Members

Senior membership in CAP is much more focused around accomplishing the three corporate missions of CAP, and day to day administration of the local unit. All cadet activities require senior member supervision, and many functions of CAP operations can be done only by members who are 18 or 21 years of age or older.

Senior membership is available to people who are at least 18 years of age. Senior member applicants must submit a fingerprint chart with their application, which will be compared to an FBI database for security and criminal records.

Adult participation in every field is essential to completing the missions of CAP. If you have some time, you have what it takes to pitch in and help out!

Senior Membership Categories
Not all senior members are required to wear the Air Force style uniform, and hold squadron level senior staff positions. CAP has plenty to do, so you as a senior member can choose your level of involvement. Any amount of help is helpful, whether enormous or modest, and is greatly appreciated. Here is a list of senior membership types and descriptions.

Active Member
An active member of CAP is an adult who regularly attends meetings (weekly), meets training requirements, participates in activities of the unit, and performs a specific duty assignment. Duty assignments include all professional areas: Administration, Logistics, Public Affairs, Personnel, Air, Ground, and Facilities Operations, Medic, Legal, Management, Historian, Communications, Info Tech, and Cadet Programs just to name a few. Most of the non-licensed-professional jobs in CAP can be learned by anyone, by basic on the job training. You don't have to be an expert to contribute, you just have to become one (gradually). We do our best to resource our volunteers to help them gain knowledge and proficiency while they work with us. Active Members are eligible to wear either the corporate civilian, or the USAF style uniform, and attain and advance in rank and position.

Cadet Sponsor Member
Cadet sponsor members must be the parents, grandparents, or legal guardian of a current cadet member. The Cadet Sponsor Membership is designed to allow parents to participate in CAP as chaperones, and assist with transportation. CSMs may help out in some ways that non-member parents cannot, including driving corporate vehicles, riding as passengers on corporate or military airplanes, and having access to otherwise restricted facilities which CAP uses from time to time. CSMs do not hold rank or staff duty, but they may wear CAP's corporate uniform (non military style).

Patron Member
Patron members are people who wish to support CAP financially, without necessarily participating in the full scope of CAP's day to day missions. Patron members may participate in CAP social events, or attend certain CAP conventions and conferences. Patrons receive a membership card, and cap's monthly national newsletter, but they do not wear any CAP uniform, and neither ride nor drive CAP or military vehicles or fly or ride in CAP or military aircraft, nor participate in CAP operations.
